From luxury silky bamboo, Egyptian cotton and crisp organic percale to affordable jersey, I tried several bedding sets to find out which one was actually the most comfortable.

There’s nothing better than getting into a cosy bed, and to have the most inviting bed possible the bedding is key. But there’s so many options out there, and so many different material choices, it can be exhausting to try to decide which bedding set to pick.

So, when I had the chance to compare several different sets, I was interested to see which ones felt better, and if the most expensive options really are best.

I tried bedding from Luff Sleep, Soak&Sleep, Bedsure and Spin & Yarn, and rated everything from softness and breathability to how luxurious each set felt to sleep in.

The contenders were all quite different. There was the Luff Sleep SilverLining Organic Bamboo Silk Duvet Set, paired with its matching SilverLining fitted sheet, the Soak&Sleep 600 thread count Egyptian cotton bedding, a Bedsure seersucker duvet cover set with its co-ordinating 100% cotton jersey fitted sheet, and the Spin & Yarn organic cotton percale duvet cover with its matching organic cotton percale fitted sheet.

So, which one came out on top?

My thoughts on the Luff Sleep SilverLining bedding

I kept coming back to the Luff SilverLining bedding because it had that combination of softness and a luxurious feel that I was looking for.

The first thing I noticed was how silky the bamboo fabric felt. Luff describes the SilverLining range as a 1000 thread count equivalent feel, with its Nanoweave bamboo silk designed to give a smooth, weightier finish. Real silver is also woven into the bamboo fibres, with the brand claiming 99.9% antibacterial protection.

For me, that all added up to bedding that was incomparably comfortable. The Luff set had that soft, drapey quality that made the whole bed feel more inviting, and it lasted from the first moment I got in bed until the moment I got out. In fact, it made me hit the snooze button a couple of times on more than one occasion.

I also really liked the matching fitted sheet. The Luff SilverLining deep fitted sheet has elasticated corners designed to grip the mattress, as well as labels indicating the short and long sides. That sounds like a small detail, but I found it made a big difference when it came to the ease of putting the sheet on.

Another big plus was temperature regulation. The Luff bamboo felt breathable rather than stuffy. The fitted sheet is specifically designed to wick moisture and regulate temperature, while the duvet cover is intended to work across the seasons, and I have found it to be comfortable both during the recent heatwaves and cooler nights.

The fact that Luff offers a 100-night sleep trial is also reassuring when you're spending more on bedding. A duvet set with a duvet cover and pillowcases starts at £99.99 for a single size, while a deep fitted sheet starts at £59.99 also for single size.

The biggest drawback is the price. Luff bedding is considerably more expensive than some of the other bedding I tried, so this is not the option I would recommend if you are simply looking for the cheapest way to refresh your bedroom.

Also be aware that the bedding is of a more delicate nature, which is to be expected given the material it is made of. That means it needs to be washed with softer laundry soaps and may not be suitable for use with some washing products. I would recommend testing anything you wish to use, for example stain remover, on a small area at the edge of the bedding first. This bedding therefore perhaps isn’t the best choice if you want something that will withstand more rigorous washing and will be easily cleaned if stains do occur.

The silky finish was just what I wanted, but I know that will be a matter of personal taste. If you love that crisp, freshly ironed cotton feeling, the Luff bedding may initially feel a little too smooth and soft and there are better options for you. More on those below.

My thoughts on the Soak&Sleep Egyptian cotton bedding

The Soak&Sleep 600 thread count Egyptian cotton bedding was probably the closest competitor to Luff when it came to that luxury hotel feeling.

It is made from 100% certified Egyptian cotton and uses a 600 thread count sateen weave. The fabric has a smooth, silky finish with a subtle sheen, while the range includes matching duvet covers and fitted sheets. It also looks traditional and expensive-looking, and like it belongs in a high end hotel, partly thanks to it’s decorative borders.

For me, it didn't quite have the same softness and comfort as Luff, but it was still extremely soft. The Egyptian cotton had that classic crisp-meets-silky quality, and I would say it is the best choice if you want a more luxurious feel but think that a silky type material may be too soft for you. It’s a great in-between option and is probably therefore the safest choice if you’re not sure what type of material would best suit you.

The bedding also helped to to keep myself and my partner cool while we slept, and we woke up feeling refreshed and comfortable. If I was choosing bedding for that crisp, hotel-inspired appearance, this would be a strong contender. Ifyou’re after a smooth, polished look and feel then this could be the set for you.

Like Luff, it sits towards the premium end of the bedding market. The duvet cover starts at £37 for single size, while fitted sheets start at £27 for 30cm standard depth, and pillowcases start at £20.40 for a pair.

The one thing I don’t like about the Soak&Sleep bedding is that the duvet cover has fabric tie closures, rather than the standard buttons. I found it to be a faff to have to tie several of these after making the bed, especially if I had changed the bed when tired and just wanted to climb in it as soon as possible. It doesn’t put me off it, but it is something to be aware of.

My thoughts on the Bedsure bedding

The Bedsure bedding was very different to the others I tried, and it is also the most affordable option of all four. The duvet cover set has a textured seersucker finish, giving the bed a more relaxed and casual look. This also means that, unlike the other three sets I tested, it was more forgiving when it came to its look post-washing. The others definitely needed ironing before being put on the bed as they were quite creased, but this one could be put straight on the bed with only a little steam needed at most.

I paired it with the Bedsure 100% cotton jersey fitted sheet. The fitted sheet has a 40cm extra-deep pocket and elasticated corners, so it is particularly practical if you have a deeper mattress. I have 25cm deep mattress, which is a standard size, and have found that the bed sheet does need quite a lot of tucking in and can still bunch up a little after being laid on overnight but it’s manageable.

The jersey sheet is soft and cosy, while the seersucker duvet cover adds texture without needing much styling. The brushed fabric reverse of the duvet feels soft on the skin, and is somewhat surprising given that both items are made from polyester. It was a very welcome surprise. My favourite feature of the duvet, by far, is that it has a zip closure, which means the task of changing the bed is so much quicker.

The downside is that it simply does not feel as luxurious as the Luff or Soak&Sleep options. The jersey sheet is soft, but it has a more casual feel than the silky bamboo or smooth Egyptian cotton. But, with prices starting at £16.99 for the duvet cover in single size and £18.99 for the bed sheet also in single size, the value of money for this bedding combo is extremely appealing. I also had a great nights sleep with this bedding, so if price point is the most important factor for you then this set is a great choice.

The seersucker texture of the duvet is not going to appeal to everyone though. I liked the slightly rumpled, relaxed appearance, and also the ease of use it offers, but if you prefer your bedroom to have that crisp hotel aesthetic, you may prefer one of the other duvet covers.

The jersey bed sheet is designed for year-round use, but I did find it to be warmer than the other sets I tried. This hasn’t been a problem for me as I have a cooler natural body temperature and prefer to be kept warm, but it is something to be aware of.

I think these Bedsure items offer a comfortable solution to everyday bedding, which isn’t a bad thing, especially at the price, but it is an important distinction when comparing it with the premium sets. If you want a budget bedding set that will fit well into the demands of everyday living, however, then this may be the one for you.

My thoughts on the Spin & Yarn bedding

The Spin & Yarn organic cotton percale bedding set was another strong contender. It is made from 100% organic cotton, has a 300 thread count and a matte finish designed to give that cool, crisp hotel-style feel. It feels understated and sophisticated, too.

I liked the freshness of the percale. It feels lighter and crisper than the other bedding sets I tried, so I can see this being particularly appealing if you prefer that freshly laundered hotel-sheet sensation.

The Spin & Yarn bedding felt beautifully made, and if your ideal bedding is very crisp cotton with a matte feel, the Spin & Yarn percale could the best match for you. Prices start at £45 for a single size Organic Cotton Percale Fitted Sheet, and £65 for single size Organic Cotton Percale Duvet Cover, so it is also a more expensive option. Discounts are available, however, for bedding bundles.

The very thing that makes the Spin & Yarn bedding appealing is ultimately what stopped it being my favourite, however, due to my personal tastes. I liked the crispness for the structure it gave, but I personally preferred a softer and more enveloping feeling.

It is also worth remembering that percale tends to have a more relaxed, matte appearance rather than the subtle sheen you get from sateen or bamboo. Again, that is a question of preference rather than quality, but it made a difference to my final choice.

My Verdict

After trying all of these bedding options, Luff Sleep was my favourite by far. The SilverLining bamboo duvet set and matching fitted sheet gave me the best combination of softness, comfort and luxury. The bamboo silk feels noticeably different from standard cotton bedding, and I particularly liked that it didn't sacrifice breathability for that sumptuous feel.

Soak&Sleep would be my pick for traditional luxury Egyptian cotton, Spin & Yarn for crisp, cool percale and Bedsure for a more affordable, relaxed option.

But if you asked me which set I would choose if I could only pick one, it would be Luff. This was the one that made getting into bed feel like the best part of the day.
