The principal cast have been revealed for the upcoming production of Legally Blonde: The Musical at London’s Open Air Theatre.

Who will play Elle Woods?

Elle Woods is the sorority sister turned unlikely law student at the centre of the Legally Blonde story, a role made famous by Reese Witherspoon in the 2001 film of the same name.

For the Regent’s Park musical product, Courtney Bowman takes the lead role of loveable Elle. A 27 year old actor from Lincolnshire, Courtney has previously starred in SIX, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Blondel and The Wind in the Willows.

Who will play the other leading cast members?

Alistair Toovey will play Warner, alongside Michael Ahomka-Linsday as attorney and teacher assistant Emmett, Lauren Drew as murder-accused Brooke Windham, Vanessa Fisher as Elle’s love rival Vivienne, Nadine Higgin as beautician and Elle’s friend Paulette.

Also performing will be Isaac Hesketh, Grace Mouat, Hannah Yun Chamberlai, Alžbeta Matyšáková, and Eugene McCoy as Professor Callahan.

The casting has been praised on Twitter for it’s diversity, stepping away from the all-white, heteronormative casting featured in the 2001 film.

What is Legally Blonde the musical based on?

Legally Blonde is written by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin (music and lyrics) and Heather Hach (book). The musical includes songs such as ‘Omigod You Guys’, ‘Take It Like A Man,’ ‘Bend and Snap’ and ‘Legally Blonde’.

It is based on the 2001 novel by Amanda Brown and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture of the same name.

In the film, as in the musical, Elle Woods is a Southern Californian prom queen and fashion major, whose heart is broken when her college boyfriend Warner Huntington III dumps her in order to head to Harvard Law School and find a more serious girl.

Elle retaliates by winning her way into the prestigious Harvard Law in the hopes of proving herself to Warner and reclaiming his love.
