To mark the 10th anniversary of Maury Yeston and Peter Stone’s award-winning show, Titanic the Musical, a UK tour of the production is planned for 2023, commencing in Churchill Theatre, Bromley.

‘The unsinkable’ ship

Based on the accounts of real-life survivors of the RMS Titanic, Titanic the Musical weaves a story of the hopes and aspirations of those who travelled on the ill-fated vessel on its maiden voyage across the North Atlantic Ocean in April 1912.

It takes the famous tragedy and uses it to examine the disparities between the different voyagers aboard: from the third class immigrants, who yearn to live free in America, to the millionaire Barons of the first class, determined to turn their fortunes into an ever-lasting legacy.

In real life, 1517 men, women and children were lost when the Titanic sunk, making it a seemingly unlikely topic for a musical - yet the show won five Tony Awards when it premiered, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book - and has proved an enduring success.

The music and lyrics are by Maury Yeston, while the book is by Peter Stone. Collectively, the pair have won an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, an Olivier Award and three Tony awards.

Yeston said: “It’s thrilling to me to be taking (the show) back on tour across the UK.

“Every character in the show has the name of someone who was actually on the Titanic. There are no invented names because we wanted to honour those brave souls who were on the ship.

He added: “I hope (the audience) will be moved, I hope they will be entertained and most importantly I hope they will be filled with the emotion of having seen the worst but also the best of what human beings can accomplish.”
