Former professional boxer Amir Khan cannot enter a boxing match or any other sports competition for two years after he tested positive for a banned substance last year.

The 36-year-old denied any wrongdoing despite failing the drugs test for the anabolic agent Ostarine in the wake of his fight against Kell Brook in February 2022.

Before Amir announced his retirement the following May, a provisional suspension was imposed on 6 April 2022 with the expiration date set to 5 April 2024.

Upon hearing the verdict, Amir Khan who previously accepted a violation of anti-doping rules but admitted he never intentionally ingested the substance, said: “I have never cheated. I am a retired fighter. You can see by my performance against Kell Brook [that it] wasn't the best. I lost the fight. If I went in there and knocked Kell Brook out it [would be] different.”

The sports ban comes as Amir Khan has turned his focus somewhat to television. Amir starred in three seasons of his own BBC show called ‘Meet the Khans: Big in Bolton’ alongside his influencer wife Faryal Makhdoom, with the latest season running in January 2023.

In addition, Amir was one of the first stars announced to return to ITV’s I’m A Celebrity for its all star show in South Africa following his appearance in 2017 with the likes of Georgia Toffolo and Jamie Lomas.

Upon his initial appearance, Amir was the highest-paid contestant in the history of the show beating the previous £400,000 record set by Katie Price in season nine.

Despite being one of the highest paid contestants in the ITV show’s history, could this new sports ban impact the boxing champion's appearance in the upcoming season?

The spin off is due to hit screens next month in May 2023 with Diversity’s Jordan Banjo and TV legend Carol Vorderman joining Amir on the line-up, so PeopleWorld will keep an eye out for confirmation on his place on the plane to South Africa.
