The business end of the women’s competition at this year’s French Open is about to take place, with one Quarter Final draw taking place tomorrow featuring the unseeded Czech player Karolína Muchová taking on Russian player Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova - who at the start of the competition ranked 333 in the world.

This means that with her reaching the quarter finals, Pavlyuchenkova becomes the lowest ranked women’s tennis player to ever reach this stage of the competition, and the third lowest ranked women’s tennis player to ever reach a quarter-final at a Grand Slam event. She trails behind Kaia Kanepi, the lowest ranked to make a Grand Slam quarter final at the 2017 US Open and Martina Hingis at the 2006 Australian Open as players who ranked outside the WTA top 250 rankings that made it deep into the respective competitions.

Born on July 3, 1991, in Samara, Russia, Pavlyuchenkova started playing tennis at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of junior tennis. She turned professional in 2005 and has since become one of the prominent figures in women's tennis. Known for her powerful groundstrokes and aggressive playing style, Pavlyuchenkova has achieved notable success in both singles and doubles competitions.

Throughout her career, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has showcased her skills and determination on various tennis courts around the world. She has competed in all four Grand Slam tournaments, reaching multiple quarterfinals and semifinals. Pavlyuchenkova's biggest breakthrough came at the 2021 French Open, where she reached her first Grand Slam singles final. Although she fell short of the title, her impressive performance solidified her status as a top-tier player in the tennis world.

Beyond her achievements in individual tournaments, Pavlyuchenkova has also contributed to the success of the Russian national team in international competitions. She has represented Russia in numerous Fed Cup ties, helping the team reach the final and win the title in 2020. However, she spent most of 2022 rehabbing an injury, which prevented her from participating in a number of Grand Slams throughout last year.
