This weekend England will take on Sri Lanka for their fifth and final group stage fixture following a triumphant win over current group leaders New Zealand this week. England had just one win to their name until Tuesday 1 November, beating Afghanistan but losing to Ireland last week.

England set up a score of 179 for New Zealand to chase down, thanks to the efforts of Alex Hales towards the end of the powerplay and Jos Buttler further into the innings. Hales hit 52 off 40 before Buttler came into action and scored 73 off 47. England were reduced to 179/6 by the end of the innings with Trent Boult the only bowler not to take a wicket.

However, two wickets for Chris Woakes and Sam Curran as well as a wicket apiece for Mark Wood and Ben Stokes reduced New Zealand’s total rapidly and, despite a solid effort from Glenn Philips who hit 62 off just 36 balls, Kane Williamson’s side could only reach 159/6 by the end of their 20 overs.

England’s win has now put them back up to second in the group table and they must beat Sri Lanka if they are to progress to the next stage of the competition.
