A statement from cricket Tasmania reads: “Following discussions over the last 24 hours, Tim Paine has advised Cricket Tasmania that he will be taking a leave of absence from all forms of cricket for the foreseeable future.

“Tim’s decision makes him unavailable for selection for today’s Marsh One-Day Cup match against Western Australia. His place in the squad will be taken by Charlie Wakim.

Paine announced his decision to give up the captaincy last week, after it was revealed that he had been the subject of a misconduct investigation in 2018, due to sending sexually explicit text messages to a female co-worker the previous year.

Posting on Twitter, new skipper Cummins wrote: “I feel incredibly honored, privileged and excited to be named the Australian Mens Test Captain. I’ll be trying my best and can’t wait to get started at the Gabba in a couple of weeks! Also very lucky to have my man @steve_smith49 alongside me as VC. #ashes”

Australia begin their Ashes series against England on December 8th, with the first match taking place at The Gabba in Brisbane.

Australia will now need a new wicket-keeper for the series, which could gift a Test debut to Leeds-born glovesman Josh Inglis.

The 26-year-old plays first-class cricket for Western Australia, as well as T20 for the Perth Scorchers.

Alternatively, 30-year-old Alex Carey, could be given the nod.
