The FIFA Women's World Cup kicks off today Australia v Republic of Ireland. ITV host Laura Woods is joined by Karen Carney and Emma Byrne to present coverage of the opening Group B match from Stadium Australia in Sydney. 

Live coverage of the tournament will be available to watch on BBC and ITV channels from Thursday 20 July - Sunday 20 August with England's first match on Saturday 22 July.

Following the Lionesses success during the UEFA Women's EURO 2022 where they beat Germany and won their first major title in front of a record crowd, we are expecting big things from the England team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

The Women's World Cup was first held in China in 1991. It’s hosted in a different county every four years, this time it will be held in stadiums across New Zealand and Australia. There are 32 nations competing in the Women’s World Cup for the first time. Originally it started with just 12. 

Current champions United States have won the trophy four times, their last win was during the tournament in France (2019). The other winners are Germany, with two titles, and Japan and Norway with one title each.

Who is playing for England at the Women's World Cup?

England’s head coach Sarina Wiegman has named her 23-player squad for this summer's tournament which includes Mary Earps, Alex Greenwood, Esme Morgan, Jordan Nobbs and Katie Robinson. Beth Mead has been left out due to injury.

When does the FIFA Women's World Cup start?

It all kicks off on Thursday 20 July until the final on Sunday 20 August. There will be live coverage on the BBC and ITV for the entire tournament. England's first match against Haiti will be available to watch on ITV from 10:30 am July 22. Their second game against Denmark will be on BBC 9:30 am on July 28. 

  • The Initial Group Stage Matches: July 20 - August 3
  • Round of 16 Teams: August 5 - August 8
  • Quarterfinals: August 11 and August 12
  • Two Semi-Final Matches: August 15 and August 16
  • Third Place Match: August 19
  • Final Match August 20

Groups  - The eight starting groups in this year’s tournament are as follows:

  • Group A: New Zealand, Philippines, Norway, Switzerland
  • Group B: Australia, Ireland, Canada, Nigeria
  • Group C: Spain, Costa Rica, Zambia, Japan
  • Group D: England, Haiti, Denmark, China
  • Group E: USA, Vietnam, Netherlands, Portugal
  • Group F: France, Jamaica, Brazil, Panama
  • Group G: Sweden, South Africa, Italy, Argentina
  • Group H: Germany, Morocco, Columbia, South Korea
