10 footballers that have been booed by their own fans - including Man Utd, Chelsea and Real Madrid stars
Here are ten players who, like Man Utd’s Harry Maguire, have suffered the indignity of being booed by their own fanbase.
Pre-season football tours are usually enjoyed by a global fan base as an opportunity to watch their team that they will otherwise not be able to see in the flesh.
Friendlies tend to be easy watching, light-heared affairs, however a portion of Manchester United’s fans used their clash with Crystal Palace on Tuesday as a chance to boo captain Harry Maguire.
Despite United enjoying a comfortable 3-1 over the Eagles in Australia, the Melbourne locals were keen to share their feelings towards the centre-back after a difficult Premier League campaign in 2021/22.
Maguire has previously been the subject of abuse during a friendly between England and Ivory Coast, however it appears that wasn’t the end of it.
While many have shared their disgust at the treatment Maguire received by his own fans, it’s certainly not the only time this has happened.

5. Fernando Torres - Chelsea
A majority of Fernando Torres’ time with Chelsea was a disaster and fans were beginning to be pushed over the edge with his poor performances. On his 100th appearance for Chelsea against Swansea in the League Cup, the striker was booed continuously and the crowd cheered when he was subbed off for Demba Ba.
6. David Beckham - LA Galaxy
Beckham opted to join AC Milan on loan from LA Galaxy in 2009 while the MLS was out of action and swore to return once the new season began. However, the midfielder ended up staying at LA Galaxy for part of the new MLS campaign and fans were furious. Beckham was booed relentlessly by LA Galaxy fans following his eventual return.
7. Rio Ferdinand - Manchester United
Three years after joining Manchester United, Ferdinand was stalling on signing a new £100,000-a-week contract, while also being linked with a move to rivals Chelsea. This led to the defender being booed during every pre-season friendly. Of course, Ferdinand didn’t leave Old Trafford for another 13 years.
8. Joe Gomez - England
Joe Gomez’s substitution on against Montenegro in November 2019 was met with a chorus of boos following his bust-up with Raheem Sterling. The pair were involved in a on-field clash during Liverpool’s win over Man City four days earlier.
