Who are Ukraine's dangermen? 5 key players England must look out for and Ukraine's tactics and formation

Gareth Southgate has already warned England that the job isn’t done as they get ready to face dark horses Ukraine in the Euro 2020 quarter-final.

Having disposed of Germany in the last 16, expectations are high of England making the semi-finals at least at the tournament.

Standing in their way is Ukraine. There may be no huge names in the opposition ranks, certainly not as high profile as their manager Andriy Shevchenko, but with a unity and sense of purpose, Ukraine will still pose a major threat to England. Here’s who their key men are.

Who are Ukraine’s players to watch?

Oleksandr Zinchenko

No stranger to England, the left-sided Manchester City man is one of Shevchenko’s key men out on the pitch. Capable of outstanding delivery with his left foot, he opened the scoring against Sweden before setting up the winner with a superb cross. Likely to play either left wing-back or on the left of a midfield three.

Andriy Yarmalenko

Another player familiar to Premier League watchers, West Ham forward Yarmalenko is arguably their star man. Shevchenko is Ukraine’s all-time leading goalscorer but Yarmelenko is closing in on his record, after two goals in the group stages. Likely to start on the right and cut in onto his fierce left foot to either score, as he did against Holland, or create a goal as he did for Zinchenko against Sweden.

Roman Yaremchuk

The focal point of Ukraine’s attack and someone who will provide Harry Maguire and John Stones with a physical battle. Still just 25 and standing at 6ft 3in, Yaremchuk has come into Euro 2020 off the back of a brilliant season in Belgium, where he scored over 20 goals in all competitions for Genk, and has notched another twice already at this tournament.

Ruslan Malinovskyi

One of the many Atalanta players who have shone this tournament. Serie A’s rising side have seen no fewer than five of their players score at Euro 2020 – and it would have been six had Malinokskyi not had his penalty saved against North Macedonia. A set-piece expert with an eye for goal, good movement and excellent distribution, he keeps Ukraine’s midfield ticking over.

Mykola Matviyenko

An excellent defender who will surely be on the move soon from Shaktar Donetsk. Initially started his career at left-back before moving into the middle of defence, he is comfortable in a back four or a three. He reads the game well, is strong in the challenge, and has a good long passing range.

What formation will Ukraine play?

Shevchenko has not been afraid to change formation and tactics in his time as Ukraine manager, much the same as Gareth Southgate with England.

The group games saw the Yellow and Blues adopt a 4-3-3 system with Yarmolenko and Oleksandr Zubkov flanking main striker Yaremchuk.

Shevchenko switched to a 3-5-2 formation for the last 16 game against Sweden with the main shock being Malinovskyi axed to the bench as defensive midfielder Taras Stepanenko was drafted in.

Yarmolenko and Yaremchuk were the two strikers and Zinchenko and Oleksandr Karavayev as the wing-backs, providing width and an attacking threat.
