AFCON 2022 updates: Mohamed Salah scores winning penalty for Egypt

The Africa Cup of Nations has its eight quarter-finalists.

Ivory Coast and Egypt concluded the AFCON’s round of 16 on Wednesday night.

The final two fixtures brought us two 0-0 stalemates - with both clashes ending with penalty shoot-outs.

Yves Bissouma and Moussa Djenepo both featured for Mali as were knocked out of the tournament by Equatorial Guinea.

The defeat for Mali came as a shock as they are 61 places higher in the world rankings than yesterday’s opponents.

With only one shot on target apiece, the game went to penalties and goalkeeper Jesus Owono was the hero as he saved two penalties and sent Equatorial Guinea through to the quarter-finals.

They will now face Sadio Mane’s Senegal on Sunday.

Ivory Coast v Egypt

Ivory Coast v Egypt featured a number of Premier League stars in Eric Bailly, Nicolas Pepe, Wilfred Zaha, Maxwel Cornet, Mohamed Elneny, Trezeguet and Mo Salah.

Egypt had conceded only one goal during the group stage and claimed a third clean sheet against Ivory Coast.

Despite a total of 34 shots for both sides, the match ended 0-0.

Egypt enjoyed a perfect penalty shoot-out, while it was a poor pen from Manchester United’s Bailly that sent Ivory Coast home.

Egypt will now face Morocco on Sunday.
