The defeat for Mali came as a shock as they are 61 places higher in the world rankings than yesterday’s opponents.

With only one shot on target apiece, the game went to penalties and goalkeeper Jesus Owono was the hero as he saved two penalties and sent Equatorial Guinea through to the quarter-finals.

They will now face Sadio Mane’s Senegal on Sunday.
