Aston Villa team news: Four key players ruled out of Europa League clash against Fenerbahce

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is dealing wih a midfield hat has been stretched thin by injuries.

The Premier League high-fliers have travelled to Turkey for tonight’s (Janaury 22) Europa League tie against Fenerbahce. A win would see Villa secure a top eight finish in the group stage, automatically qualifying for the knock-outs.

Emery’s side are currently third in the Premier League, ahead of the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea. In the European competition, Villa are in the exact same position, level with group stage leaders Lyon and Midtjylland on 15 points.

This evening’s game comes while Villa navigate an injury crisis, with four players already ruled out and two others a doubt.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is recovering from a calf injury, meaning Marco Bizot is likely to start in net. In the midfield, a new knee injury for John McGinn will keep him sidelined; Boubacar Kamara also has a knee injury, as does Ross Barkley.

Meanwhile, Amadou Onana and Jadon Sancho are doubts for the game, which could see 22-year-old defender Lamare Bogarde pushed up to midfield in the starting XI.

Speaking ahead of the match, Emery said: “Of course, it’s a very difficult match, and they have a very good team, historic team, experienced team.

“They have very good players. They have a fantastic atmosphere here with their supporters, very passionate supporters. We respect them a lot.”

Fenerbahce boss Domenico Tedesco added: “The support we receive is unbelievable; it provides that extra 10 per cent of motivation. It will be a difficult night for Villa.

“Honestly, right now, I don’t think any team in Europe wants to play us in our stadium.”
