The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been in fine form in front of goal since returning to United for a second stint over the summer, and is now well clear of his nearest rivals in terms of his overall career total.

Ronaldo’s brace against Arsenal took him to 12 goals in 17 appearances across all competitions so far this season.

Of that tally, six of his strikes have come in the Premier League, with the other six coming in just five Champions League group stage outings.

He’s reached that total in 1,097 matches, and it is widely accepted that he has scored more goals than any other player in top-level football.

Of his 801 strikes, Ronaldo scored 450 for Real Madrid – in just 438 matches, no less – as well as hitting 130 for Manchester United, 101 for Juventus, five for Sporting Lisbon, and 115 for Portugal’s national team.

Who is nearest Ronaldo in the all-time rankings?

While there are no official databases for that span the entirety of professional footballing history, it is widely accepted that Ronaldo has registered more top level strikes than any other player ever.

Brazilian legends Pele and Romario both claim to have scored over 1,000 goals, but if we filter out friendlies and exhibition matches, their tallies drop to somewhere in the 700s.

The nearest thing we have to an properly-acknowledged record on the matter comes from unofficial statisticians RSSSF.

They put Pele (769) closest to Ronaldo’s running total of 801, followed by Romario and Ferenc Puskas (both 761).

Lionel Messi is next on the list, with an ongoing tally of 756 goals for Barcelona, Argentina, and PSG collectively.
