The 25-year-old has started both of the Three Lions’ group stage matches at Euro 2020 so far, and put in a man-of-the-match display in his side’s opener against Croatia.
Things were a little more frustrating for Phillips and his teammates in Friday’s 0-0 draw against Scotland, however, and Mourinho has suggested that Southgate should consider bringing in teenage talent Jude Bellingham to freshen things up in the middle of the park.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “In this nature of match, I believe a player like Bellingham is better than having, at the same time, Rice and Phillips.
“Both are playing well, but the team now needs, in my opinion, something different. I wouldn’t have any doubt about it.
"I keep saying that when a team is a little bit lacking in confidence, or playing with some fears, you have to play the one that doesn’t hide, and the one that doesn’t hide is Grealish. He can make his mistakes, he can lose the ball, but he doesn’t hide. I believe England need something like that.
"If Mount is out then I believe that it’s easy, you just play Grealish as a 10. I would play him in behind Harry Kane, and I would play Bellingham in midfield.
"I would have to make a difficult decision because it is not easy for us coaches to leave out players you are happy with, but between Rice and Phillips one has to stay out – probably Phillips.”
