In this week’s edition of ‘Do we live in a malfunctioning simulation or is existence just a futile fever dream?’ football fans the world over were shocked to find out that Pepe Reina has been playing the part of a lavishly-dressed anthropomorphic penguin on Spain’s version of the Masked Singer.
The premise of the show is simple enough – celebrities dress up in massively outlandish disguises and make fools of themselves by awkwardly butchering chart smashes.
But while there have been some unexpected reveals over the course of the show’s lifespan – who could have predicted that Kermit the Frog would be the celeb inside a giant snail on the Masked Singer US? – absolutely nobody could have guessed that former Liverpool safe hands Reina would turn his attention to playing Happy Feet.
Nonetheless, it got us thinking about other footballers who have popped up on reality TV in recent years.
We’ve gathered 10 of the best, and weirdest, below...
5. Djibril Cisse - Danse avec les Stars
Cisse was always a bit of character, so it probably wasn't too much of a surprise to see him rock up on the French version of Strictly Come Dancing in 2015. He was promptly eliminated first, meaning that we were robbed of the chance to see him pit his wits against the likes of 'Mythic Dance Week', and 'Disney Week'. Anybody who says they wouldn't have paid good money to see the peroxide blonde hitman cutting about the dancefloor to Hakuna Matata is a downright liar. (Photo by Mark Runnacles/Getty Images)

6. Paul Gascoigne - Isola de Famosi
Gazza is a bit of a cult hero in Italy following his time with Lazio, and proved to be a popular addition to this year's Italian version of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here. Unfortunately, the 54-year-old was forced to quit the show after dislocating his shoulder 38 days. (Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images)

7. Raul Meireles - Lip Sync Battle Portugal
Another bearded maverick who once played for Liverpool, Meireles donned his best mustard harem pants and tied a length of rope round his forehead to awkwardly mime his way through a rendition of António Variações' unbelievably catchy 'O Corpo É Que Paga' on Lip Sync Battle Portugal a couple of years ago. Go and watch it, it truly has to be seen to be believed. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

8. Bruce Grobbelaar - Hell's Kitchen
The wobbly-legged stopper proved he could handle the heat in the kitchen by impressing judge Marco Pierre White early doors. Ultimately, however, he couldn't handle how much he missed his wife, so he left the competition early. (Photo by Anesh Debiky/ITM Group via Gallo Images/Getty Images)
