In this week’s edition of ‘Do we live in a malfunctioning simulation or is existence just a futile fever dream?’ football fans the world over were shocked to find out that Pepe Reina has been playing the part of a lavishly-dressed anthropomorphic penguin on Spain’s version of the Masked Singer.
The premise of the show is simple enough – celebrities dress up in massively outlandish disguises and make fools of themselves by awkwardly butchering chart smashes.
But while there have been some unexpected reveals over the course of the show’s lifespan – who could have predicted that Kermit the Frog would be the celeb inside a giant snail on the Masked Singer US? – absolutely nobody could have guessed that former Liverpool safe hands Reina would turn his attention to playing Happy Feet.
Nonetheless, it got us thinking about other footballers who have popped up on reality TV in recent years.
We’ve gathered 10 of the best, and weirdest, below...
9. Stan Collymore - The Farm
Collymore stormed off Channel Five series The Farm in 2004 after a bust-up with one-hit wonder Vanilla Ice following a disagreement over how long the rapper spent on the toilet. We truly are a nation of elite cultural export. (Photo by Jan Kruger/Getty Images for Soccerex)

10. Rene Higuita - ExtremeChange
This is quite a sad one, this. The eccentric proponent of the Scorpion Kick initially made his televisual bow on the superbly-titled 'La Isla de los Famosos: Una Aventura Pirata', or' The Island of the Famous: A Pirate Adventure'. After being voted Colombia's 'ugliest icon', however, he decided to go under the knife live for a show called ExtremeChange. Higuita had a silicon chin implant fitted, as well as 'aggressive' liposuction. At least he was happy with the results though, claiming afterwards, 'Bodily, I am perfect'. For what it's worth, with that mane of ebony ringlets, we always thought Rene was quite the looker in the first place. (Photo by Allsport/Getty Images)
