When the January transfer window opens and closes - key dates as Newcastle to lead Premier League charge

The January transfer window is an exciting time for football fans as clubs aim to improve their squads across the board.

Newcastle United will be the new big players in the market following their Saudi-led takeover which should see the Magpies transformed in the coming years.

But we will see the usual suspects such as Manchester United, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea occupy the transfer rumour mill throughout January.

When does the January transfer window open?

The January transfer window opens on Saturday, 1 January across England, Scotland and Europe. However, this does not apply to Spain's La Liga, which opens its window on Monday, 3 January.

When does the January transfer window close?

The January transfer window will remain open throughout the entire month before slamming shut at 11:59pm on Monday, 31 January 2022, for all leagues and clubs across the UK and Europe.

Potential January transfers

Erling Haaland is unlikely to be on the move this January as Borussia Dortmund look to tie him down to a new deal, but he could still leave in the summer thanks to his current £63.9 million release clause.

Cristiano Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes has dismissed the suggestion that his client could leave Manchester United during the window.

Bukayo Saka of Arsenal, however, has been linked with Liverpool and rumours are rife that the England starlet is 'interested' in a switch to Anfield.

But it's Newcastle who will no doubt be creating the biggest buzz throughout the month, though it must be said even Magpies' part-owner Amanda Staveley recognises the challenges of doing business in January as opposed to the summer.

"We've got a robust business plan and we're developing that every week," the part-owner told NUFC TV in November. "January is amongst us so we're preparing for the January transfer window.

"It's not a window that we would ordinarily want to invest in, because you probably don't get the right deals, but that's something that is important at the moment and preparing for that."
