Manchester United vs Southampton: Will Marcus Rashford play?

Manchester United will look to build on a recent upturn in form as they face a struggling Southampton side, who find themselves firmly rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.

The Red Devils come into this game after a penalty shootout victory away at Arsenal in the FA Cup and a 2-2 draw in a battling display away from home against Liverpool in the league. While the Saints enjoyed a successful FA Cup outing, defeating Swansea City 3-0, their league form continues to falter as they were thrashed 5-0 at home by Brentford – yet another disappointing performance that has become all too familiar for Southampton this season.

Team news:

Diogo Dalot was shown a red card for two yellow card offences against Arsenal and will now serve a one-match suspension. Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans all remain out injured with no dates set yet for their return. Question marks have been raised over Harry Maguire’s fitness but he seems fit to play.

Reserve goalkeeper Altir Bayandir was given the nod for the Arsenal game - and acquitted himself very well - but regular number 1 Andre Onana is expected to start tonight.

It remains to be seen whether or not Marcus Rashford will be involved, as he has struggled for minutes under new boss Ruben Amorim, and has said that he is “open to a new challenge”.

For Southampton, Jack Stephens, Juan Larios and Ross Stewart continue to be unavailable through injury. However, Saints boss Ivan Juric is optimistic that Flynn Downes will be fit to play after missing the last three matches due to a thigh issue.

Midfielder Will Smallbone returned from injury against Swansea City and is in contention to feature once more, while goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, after recovering from a long-term Achilles injury, represented the club’s Under-21s last Friday.

Matheus Fernandes is available for selection again after serving a one-match ban.
