Newcastle United confirm former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe as new manager

Eddie Howe has been named the new manager of Newcastle United.

The former Bournemouth and Burnley boss, 43, was an early favourite to replace Steve Bruce when the former ex-Newcastle boss was sacked last month.

However, the market has changed drastically over the past two weeks with a number of different names all taking over the mantle of “favourite” including current Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers, former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca and Villareal manager Unai Emery - who confirmed the club’s interest in appointing him but decided to stay with the La Liga side.

Howe earned massive plaudits for his work with Bournemouth between 2021 and 2020, leading the Cherries from League 1 to the Premier League and establishing them as a top flight side over five seasons.

Earlier this year, Howe was close to taking over at Scottish Premiership side Celtic but that deal collapsed late in the day with the Glasgow club blaming “outwith both his and our control” in a statement.

Although he has never brought silverware to a club during his managerial career, Howe has won several personal accolades including LMA Manager of the Year in 2015, Premier League Manager of the Month on three occasions and Football League Manager of the Decade (2005–2015).

In Newcastle United’s statement confirming the news today, Howe said: "It is a great honour to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United. It is a very proud day for me and my family.

"This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players.

"I would like to thank the club's owners for this opportunity and thank the club's supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together."

Newcastle United co-owner, Amanda Staveley said: "We have been incredibly impressed by Eddie through what has been a rigorous recruitment process.

"As well as his obvious achievements with AFC Bournemouth, where he had a transformational impact, he is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas about taking this team and club forward.

"He is a great fit for what we are trying to build here. We are delighted to welcome Eddie and his staff to St. James' Park and very much look forward to working together towards our collective ambitions."

Howe will began his reign after the international break, when Newcastle will host Brentford at St. James’ Park.
