Newcastle United fan ownership bid: Here are NINE other clubs Toon supporters can look to for inspiration
Newcastle United fans have made headlines this week by starting an initiative that would see them become part owners of the club in the future.
The Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust have publicised plan that they’re calling the 1892 Pledge which aims to raise enough funds whereby they could buy a stake in the club if and when Mike Ashley comes to selling up and leaving St. James’ Park.
NUST board member Alex Hurst has suggested that a figure of around £3 million is the target, with the Trust believing that amount to be adequate to purchase a stake.
The pledge is proving popular on Tyneside too, with Toon legend Alan Shearer already giving it his backing.
But Newcastle fans aren’t the first to flirt with part-ownership of their beloved club.
Here are nine more examples of British sides who are, to some extent, owned by their supporters...

1. Brentford
Bees United, the Brentford FC Supporters Trust, used to own 60.3% of the shares in the Championship club, while Matthew Benham, himself a fan, owned 30.7%. At one time, various other supporters owned the other 9.0% of shares too. Eventually, the Supporters Trust sold their entire shareholding to Benham who swept the other minority stakes to own 100% of the club. (Photo by Clive Rose/Getty Images) Photo: Clive Rose

2. Accrington Stanley
Stanley only have two shareholders who own more than 10% of the club individually, but at one point supporters owned a cumulative total of around 12% of the club. (Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images) Photo: Clive Brunskill

3. Carlisle United
The United Trust own a 25.4% stake in Carlisle United. At least one elected member of the trust sits on the board of the club at any time. (Photo by Stu Forster/Getty Images) Photo: Stu Forster

4. Gateshead
If Newcastle fans need any guidance on how to go about buying part of their club, they need only take a look across the Tyne. The Gateshead Soul Supporters Trust purchased a minority club shareholding in February 2021. (Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty Images) Photo: Alex Pantling
