But the nature of professional sport also means that one person’s hero might be another person’s villain. Whether it be because of bitter rivalry or personal preference, we all have superstars who grind our gears a little.
And a new study conducted by Bookmakers.tv has surveyed the British public to determine who the nation's most unpopular sports stars actually are.
With representatives from the world of football, boxing, cricket, and more, it’s a hotly-contested battle – but who has dubious honour of wearing the crown?
