Scotland out of Euro 2020: Croatia 3-1 Scotland as Callum McGregor scores only goal for Scotland in European Championship

Steve Clarke and the Scottish national team have waved goodbye to their chances of reaching the final 16 of the Euros 2020, losing 3-1 to Croatia.

The game got off to a promising start for the boys in blue, as McGinn and Tierney dominated the pitch and took their fair few chances of a Scotland goal.

But it wasn’t to be, as Croatian Nikola Vlasic scored the opening goal in the 17th minute, before his teammates went on to dominate the first half with more than 60 percent of possession.

Scotland fail get possession after opening goal from Vlasic

Celtic’s Callum McGregor wasn’t ready to bow out though, and offered Scotland a second chance with an equaliser in the 42nd minute. The atmosphere at Hampden was electric, the first goals scored for Scotland in a major tournament since 1998.

During half time, former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan praised the boys for their skill and performance - keeping the heid after the first goal knocked them.

As the second half got underway, the Tartan Army could be heard chanting from the stands, as they cried out for “Super John McGinn”, the Aston Villa player’s possession of the ball was skilled, observant and promising. But he failed to turn opportunity into real success.

Super McGinn’s chances were knocked again by a magnificent Luka Modric strike with the outside of his boot from the edge of the box in the 63rd minute.

Scotland defender McKenna was introduced to the game, and within minutes had been served a yellow card. Commentators reckoned it could be a record, he’d not even got a foot on the ball and already had to be careful with how he marked out Croatian striker Perisic.

It was in the 77th minute that the final blow to Scotland came, as Perisic slipped it in Marshall’s net. The ball bounced off the post and into the net without any Scottish defenders marking its journey.

McGregor continued to take chances, as did McGinn and Tierney, led by a fiery Robertson. It was a strong performance from the Scotland team, but they failed to challenge Croatia’s two-goal lead.

After an additional three minutes of injury time, the game was over and the Croatian team celebrated as the final whistle blew.

Scotland finished with only a third of possession, Moderic controlled the game and led his team to victory.

And after 95 minutes of agonising football, Scotland are out of the Euros. There’s always the World Cup next year.
