Romeo Beckham, however, is trying to make a name for himself and on Sunday 19 September he made his debut for Fort Lauderdale CF, having signed a contract with the third-tier US soccer team earlier this month.

Previously, Romeo had spent time with the Arsenal Academy before signing his first professional contract with the reserve team for the Beckham owned Major League Soccer franchise, Inter Miami, a team now managed by former England Women’s manager, Phil Neville.

Beckham’s first match saw his team draw with Tormenta FC 2-2 in the United Soccer League (USL) League one. Fort Lauderdale is managed by English football coach, Darren Powell, and is based at the DRV PNK Stadium.

The son of the former England captain started in midfield, a position well-known to the Beckham family, and often appeared out on the right-wing - much like his dad used to. .

Showing some future promise throughout his 79 minute stint on the pitch, Beckham had a total of 19 touches in his first match with several leading to crosses from his position out on the flank.

However, his team was twice unable to hold on to the lead, with the second equaliser coming after Beckham had been substituted.

Romeo Beckham also linked up well with Harvey Neville, the son of his dad’s fellow Manchester United Class of ’92 member Phil.

The younger Neville was making his 16th appearance for the Florida-based team. Harvey had previously been a part of the Manchester United Academy before joining his father out in Miami.

The presence of both sons, Romeo Beckham in particular, will no doubt hugely raise the profile of the game in Miami.

Romeo is the first of David and Victoria Beckham’s children to have a professional football career after Brooklyn, 22, moved away from the sport to focus on his modelling and photography. Much like his younger brother, Brooklyn was part of the Arsenal Academy but was not offered a scholarship from the club.
