Chelsea captain Millie Bright, who won 88 caps for England, has retired with immediate effect. She took to Instagram and said: “Hello everybody, This is a message that I knew would come but I just didn’t know when it would come.

“So I just wanted to say thank you to all the fans.” Visibly upset with tears, Millie Bright continued: “I can’t get my words out. I think in life we have to make decisions.

“And I think in football we’re always given the answers, like we’re always told where to be, what to eat, what time to come to training. And I think I’m at a stage where I’m ready to take control of my life.

“And I think no one can tell you when the time is right but for me I’m ready to hang up my boots. I’m not going anywhere, don’t panic.

“There’s more to come. I think you lot know me better than anyone. I’m Chelsea through and through.

“And I’ve always said I’d retire at this club. I can’t ever represent another team.

“I’ve given everything on and off the pitch for the badge. And I’m so proud to have done that for the well-over a decade now.

“ I’m also so grateful that I get to continue working with the club, continuing my role as a trustee for the Chelsea Foundation, which I’m so proud of. But most importantly, get behind the girls.

“We’re going to do absolutely everything to finish in the best possible position. I’d like to say goodbye to all of you properly at Stamford Bridge against Manchester United.

“And yeah let’s have a big celebration afterwards.”

Chelsea FC Woman wrote: “Millie Bright has today announced her retirement from professional football, bringing an extraordinary Chelsea playing career to a close.

“Everyone at Chelsea would like to thank Millie for her incredible commitment and dedication to the club over the last 12 years. Her legacy is Never Done, and we’re delighted she will remain part of the Chelsea family as a trustee of the Foundation and club ambassador.

“Thank you for everything, Millie💙.”
