Germany are dangerously close to a second consecutive group stage exit from the World Cup and must beat Costa Rica if they are to progress to the next stage of the tournament. The Germans suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Japan in their opening match which immediately put them on the back foot and a solitary point they secured against Spain has just about kept them in with a chance of progressing to the next stage.

Speaking to the BBC, football manager and former German boss Jurgen Klinsmann said: “The goal is huge for Germany. I would be surprised if Germany are challenging for the trophy though. It would be huge if they could get to the semi-finals, but I think challenging for the trophy is reserved for other teams.”

Not only will this match mark the end of one of the two teams’ journeys in the World Cup, but it will also see France’s Stephanie Frappart become the first woman to referee at the men’s World Cup. The 38-year-old will lead an all-female on-field team for the fixture with Brazil’s Neuza Back and Mexican Karen Diaz Medina as her chosen assistants.

Here is all you need to know about how to follow the action in Qatar...

Team news

This will be only the second meeting between the two side in their history, with the first coming at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Germany won the match 4-2. Germany will hope Spain beat Japan as well as beating their upcoming opponents if they are to secure a place in the next round. Costa Rica, however, will need to beat Germany and any result for the Spain v Japan match could see them still go through.

Costa Rica will be without defender Francisco Calvo who picked up his second yellow card against Japan and is now subsequently suspended. Germany, on the other hand, have no fresh injury worries and Hansi Flick will once again have to decide between Thomas Muller or Niclas Fullkrug in the attack.
