Gary O’Neil tipped for Blackburn Rovers job

The search is on for the next Blackburn Rovers manager, and while he’s not favourite with the bookies, Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison believes Gary O’Neil is the man for the job.

John Eustace left promotion-chasing Rovers for relegation-threatened Derby County this week, and a host of names have been suggested as his replacement.

Former England interim boss Lee Carsley appears to be in pole position with ex-Luton manager Rob Edwards and Richie Wellens of Leyton Orient also heavily fancied. But Morrison has other ideas.

“I thought Steven Gerrard might be on the list too,” he explained. “David Lowe is the academy manager who took charge of the team when they [Rovers] beat West Brom and Rob Edwards is a good shout. I can understand Richie Wellens, he's flying at Leyton Orient at the moment.

“But it’s Gary O'Neil for me, he's a standout candidate. It just depends if Gaz wants to go or wait for a Premier League job. It's not a bad job, they're in the playoffs, they've got some talented players. There'll be a lot of managers interested in that job.

“Maybe they'll bide their time and just see how Lowe gets on for the next two or three games. And if not, just keep him in until the summer and then make a decision.

“You've got to realise Blackburn's a big football club. When I was playing, Blackburn were in the Premier League. They were a good team; they have produced some really good players and everyone would have loved to have gone to play for Blackburn Rovers.”

Former Bournemouth and Wolves manager O'Neil was sacked from his position at Molineux in December. The 41-year-old has never managed a senior team outside of the Premier League but could be enticed to Ewood Park with Rovers in the hunt for promotion to the top flight via the play-offs.
