The Open Championship has returned to the golf calendar for 2021.

In a disrupted 18 months for the sport, The British Open didn't go ahead in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic which has meant enforced restrictions on society.

Shane Lowry won The Open in 2019 and he is expected to return to defend his title against a strong field of golfers for the 149th instalment of golf's oldest major.

In 2021, The Open Championship is to be held at Royal St George's.

The 7,189 yard course in Sandwich, Kent, has hosted the major on 14 occasions before the 2021 Championship, with the first coming in 1894.

Darren Clarke was the winner the last time The Open was held at Royal St George's in 2011, pocketing around £900,000 for his week's work on the par 70.

The 2021 Open winner will reportedly take £1,935,000 in prize money.

When does The Open golf start?

Golf's elite players will begin on their quest to win The Open 2021 when the first round begins on Thursday 15 July.

It signals the first of two rounds before the customary cut and a further two rounds over the weekend to determine the winner on Sunday 18 July.

The Open 2021 tee times

Tee times for The 149th Open have been announced with Jon Rahm going out at 9.58am on the first round with Shane Lowry and Louis Oosthuizen.

Rory McIlroy will tee off at 3.21pm on Thursday 15 July in a three with Patrick Reed and Cameron Smith - here is the full list of tee times for rounds one and two.

All the action from The Open 2021 will be screened live from Royal St George's on Sky Sports Golf and Sky Sports Main Event channels.
