Controversial tennis star Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from Wimbledon 2023. The 28-year-old was due to take part in the Championships this year at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, but has now suddenly pulled out.

The 28-year-old has had to make the decision due to a niggling injury hindering his playing ability.

Kyrigios, 28, was a finalist at Wimbledon 2022 where a string of strong performances saw him go head-to-head with Novak Djokovic in last year's final where he lost in his first grand slam final to the seven-time Wimbledon champion in four sets (4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6).

However, a wrist injury is preventing Kyrigios from being able to emulate his success from last year. The Australian announced on Sunday (July 2) - on the eve of the tournament beginning - that he had torn a ligament in his wrist.

He has struggled with injury recently as he has only played one tournament this year because of a knee injury where he required surgery. He was also unable to play at his home Grand Slam - the Australian Open in January - and he was unable to return to play until June.

In a post on Instagram, he said: "I'm really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year."

"I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again.

"During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca.

"As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist.

"I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn't have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon."I'll be back and, as always, I appreciate the support from all my fans."

Kyrgios was due to go head-to-head with Belgian's David Goffin after being seeded at rank 30 for the tournament.
