What a night of drafting in the NFL.

There were some obvious choices but also some surprise picks – and a little bit of history created too.

This is how it all panned out:

No 1: Trevor Lawrence goes to the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have first pick of the night.

No 2: Zach Wilson heads to the Jets. No big surprise – Lawrence and Wilson looked head and shoulders the best quarterback options.

No 3: San Fransisco have their new quarterback and it is Trey Lance. It is a great pick and they managed to throw us a red herring with Mac Jones. Lance will be as sensation for the the 49ers

No 4: Draft history was made with the fourth pick. Kyle Pitts is the highest drafted Tight End of all time. He gets to line up alongside Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. Matt Ryan has some serious weapons.

No 5: Chase makes Top 5. Cincinatti decided to not protect Burrow and went for more weapons. Sewell state on the board and now Burrow has a receiving corps of Boyd, Higgins and Chase. A nice pick but they have to protect Burrow.

No 6: Waddle goes to Miami. A lot of mocks had Chase going to Miami but that didn't stop the Dolphins getting a new receiver in Waddle. Six picks in and all picks are on offence and nothing outside quarterback, wide receiver and tight end. There's never been seven offensive players drafted to begin a draft.

No 7: Penei Sewell created jubilant scenes in the Lions war room as they couldn't believe their luck. They get a huge upgrade - just a shame that Goff doesn't have too many weapons. Big year for Goff but he won't be running for his life.

No 8: Jaycee Horn is the highest selected defensive player as he heads to Carolina. Horn only allowed 33% of completions when targetted in the SEC and now he has the Falcons receivers and Mike Thomas to handle. Will they regret passing on Fields (they will)? But it is a huge show of confidence in Sam Darnold.

No 9: Denver can draft either Fields or Jones but they choose to do a number on Dallas and pick Patrick Surtain at CB. Will Aaron Rodgers end up in Denver after all of the talk today?

No 10: Dallas trade with the Eagles . They swap 10th and 12th picks and the Cowboys get a third round pick too. Giants were due to select Smith and The Eagles get Smith. So not only did the Eagles cost the Giants a playoff place they also steal the wide receiver they wanted too.

No 11: Giants trade with the Bears. Chicago move up from 20th to 11th. Giants GM Gettleman has never traded down until now. For dropping back they get a fifth round pick this year, a first new year and a fourth next year. Bears draft Fields as their QB1 and now Mac Jones would appear bound for New England.

No 12: Dallas drafts Parsons at linebacker. What a crazy couple of picks.

No 13: Chargers take OT Rashawn Slater. Nice protection for Herbert (take note Bengals).

No 14: Vikings trade pick to Jets. NY moves from 23rd to 14th and secures protection for Wilson with Vera-Tucker at Guard. Jets got 14th and 143rd for 23rd, 66th & 86th. Nice move by the Jets.

No 15: New England Patriots replace Tom Brady – Mac Jones will begin his apprenticeship behind Cam Newton, as we called.

No 16: Cardinals draft Collins at linebacker.

No 17: Raiders take Leatherwood at OT. Literally no reaction in Cleveland. Draft guru Daniel Jeremiah isn’t keen on the pick.

No 18: Doplhins draft a pass rusher. Jaelan Philips is the first pass rusher off the board with Miami’s second pick of the night.

No 19: WFT adds to its defence with linebacker Jamie Davis.

No 20: Giants select Toney at receiver. Bad pick for Giants better receivers in Bateman and Moore on the board.

No 21: Colts add Kwity Paye to pass rush. The Colts always draft well and this is another solid pick.

No 22: Titans draft Farley. Nice pick by Tennessee as they replace the departing Jackson who left for the Giants.

No 23: Vikings add to their offensive line with Darrisaw.

No 24: Steelers fix their running back hole. Najee Harris is the best back in the draft. This was a nailed on pick for Pittsburgh and they delivered. Harris’ stock will rise in fantasy football too.

No 25: Jags make their second pick of the round and they have the Clemson backfield. They’ve add Travis Etienne which gives the Jags options in their backfield and Lawrence now has a lot of weapons.

No 26: The home of the 2021 draft selects Greg Newsome. So adding a corner to the ranks of the Browns. Cleveland may no longer be the joke they once were and they’ll be aiming to go deeper in the playoffs this year.

No 27: Bateman joins the Ravens. I really like Bateman but I really don’t trust Baltimore through the air. Bateman is a definite upgrade but this is a run heavy team.

No 28: Saints add a push rush option. It’s all gone a bit ‘meh’ in New Orleans but Payton Turner joins but this is time to prepare for a new and not so good Saints side as they enter the post-Drew Brees era.

No 29: Packers do something that doesn’t involve Aaron Rodgers...they have drafted a corner back from Georgia in Eric Stokes. This will go under the radar as talk of Rodgers will continue to circulate.

No 30: Bills add Gregory Rousseau to their ranks and improve the defensive side of the ball. Bills will be looking to win the division again but there’s been some upgrades in the first round so far.

No 31: Ravens add Oweh to their defensive edge. He was tipped to go at numerous points in the first round and must have through he might fall to the second.

No 32: Tampa have a new player... after re-signing every player in the offseason the welcome Joe Tyron to their all ready well equipped linebacker core.

Round 2 kicks off tonight at the slightly earlier time of midnight BST. Full details here.
