When did the USA last win the Ryder Cup? Previous records as Europe and USA set for 43rd competition

The 43rd Ryder Cup will take place this weekend after being postponed last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Europe will come into this year’s competition as holders of the Cup after an impressive 17.5 to 10.5 victory over the USA in 2018 at Le Golf National, Guyancourt, France.

Since Europe was included in the Ryder Cup in 1979, Europe have won 11 times outright and have retained the cup once, compared to the USA who have won eight times in the same period.

Europe’s most successful year came in 2004 when captain, Bernhard Langer, led his team to a record-setting 18.5 to 9.5 victory over the US in Oakland Hills Golf Club, Michigan.

The United States last won the Ryder Cup in 2016. They triumphed 17-11, having not won since 2008. Before the inclusion of Europe, the US dominated the tournament winning a total of 18 times compared to Great Britain’s (and later Great Britain and Ireland) three wins.

When is the Ryder Cup taking place?

The Ryder Cup takes place from Friday 24 September 2021 to Sunday 26 September 2021.

The afternoon fourball matches are scheduled to begin at 6.10pm on Friday and Saturday with the three other fixtures due to start at 6.26pm, 6.42pm and 6.58pm.

The Sunday singles start at 5.05pm with games going off in 11-minute intervals and final match due to begin at 7.05pm.

What are the Ryder Cup teams? Who are the captains?

The European team will be captained by Padraig Harrington and the USA team will be captained by Steve Stricker.

This year’s European team does not have Justin Rose after the five-time Ryder Cup winner was left out of Harrington’s team. Instead, Harrington chose to go with fellow compatriot, Shane Lowry.

“The consistency and the play of Shane (Lowry) under pressure, under stress, that’s what we went with,” he said.

In addition to Lowry, Harrington chose Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia as his three picks. Rory McIlroy qualified for a spot in the team following the BMW PGA Chmapionship.

The US had a longer qualification campaign leading to six automatic qualifiers, after the BMW Championship, and six wildcards chosen by Stricker.

This year’s American vice-captains are Fred Couples, Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson, Phil Mickelson and previous Ryder Cup captain, Davis Love II.

Brooks Koepka is currently still in the line up, however his place is far from certain having pulled out of the Tour Championship on Saturday 4 September 2021 with an injured wrist.
