Emma Raducanu made history in September by becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam at the US Open and she was also the first British woman to win the tournament since Virginia Wade in 1977.

The 18-year-old from Kent however suffered a shock exit in her first tournament since her success as she was knocked out of the BNP Paribas Open 2021 at Indian Wells in the second round.

She has now returned to the courts in the homeland of her father and has since won her first match since lifting the US Open Trophy at the Transylvania Open

The Transylvania Open runs at the same time as the Vienna Open on the ATP tour and takes place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

The young Briton came from a set down to beat Polona Hercog, claiming her first victory since her US Open triumph.

She came back from 4-6 to win the next two sets 7-5 6-1. The Canadian-born tennis star then faced Ana Bogdan in the last 16 on Thursday 28 October 2021 and won 6-3 6-4. She will now faced Marta Kostyuk in the quarter final which will take place on Friday 29 October 2021.

After her comeback win against Hercog, Raducanu took to twitter to express her gratitude to the Romanian fans saying “super happy to get my first ever WTA win today. Multumesc mult si, te iubesc” which reads “Thank you very much and I love you.”

Speaking to the press after the match, Raducanu said “I think the key was to try and stay mentally composed.

If I kept giving myself a chance by holding serve I thought my tennis might improve and fall into place and it did - and I am really proud of myself for how I fought today.”

This year’s top seed at the event is Garbine Muguruza who is currently ranked number 5 in the world according to WTA rankings. Joining her as the top seeds were Simona Halep, Elise Mertens, Ajla Tomljanovic and Emma Raducanu. Raducanu and Halep are now the top seeds left in the competition.

What is the prize money for the Transylvania Open 2021?

The total prize money committed to the tournament is just over £171,000. The winner of the tournament is set to receive just over £21,000 while the runner up will likely receive just under £12,000.
