Tributes have been paid to Worcestrshire County Cricket Club player Josh Baker who died aged 20

A cricket club has paid tribute to its player who died at the age of 20. Worcestershire County Cricket Club said they were ‘heartbroken’ to announce the untimely passing of their spin bowler Josh Baker, described as a ‘popular figure’ within the squad.

The club said Baker was known for his “vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm that endeared him to everyone he met”. It added: “His warmth, kindness, and professionalism were remarkable, making him a true credit to his family and a loved member of our team.

Ashley Giles, Worcestershire’s Chief Executive Officer, also paid tribute. He said: “The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated. Josh was much more than a teammate; he was an integral part of our cricket family. We will all miss him terribly. All our love and prayers go out to Josh’s family and friends.”

The Club said it is currently supporting Josh’s family, friends, and colleagues during these difficult times, adding: “We are united in our grief and committed to honouring his memory in a manner befitting the remarkable person he was. Plans to pay tribute to Josh will be made in consultation with his family and will remain private at this time. The Club, along with Josh’s family, requests the respect of privacy as we mourn this immense loss. No further comments will not be provided during this sensitive period.”

Tributes have since poured in for the young cricketer on social media. Usama Mir wrote on X: “So sad and upset to hear the news of Josh’s passing. He was one of the nicest people you could meet. And a brilliant cricketer. Really devastated to hear this news. Thoughts and prayers with his family”.

Warwickshire County Cricket Club said: “Our thoughts are with you all. Terribly sad news. RIP.” Gloucestershire Cricket wrote: “The thoughts of everyone at Gloucestershire Cricket are with Josh's family and friends and everyone connected to @WorcsCCC at this incredibly difficult time.”
