World Indoor Athletics Championship 2022: when does it start, where is it held, events and how to watch on TV

We take a look at the latest as the championships prepare to return after a four-year absence, after the Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 championships, that were set to take place in Nanjing, China.

When does the competition get underway?

Serbia will host the event as athletes from around the globe make their way to Belgrade’s Stark Arena for the competition.

Events get underway on Friday 18th March and the competition comes to a close on the evening of Sunday 20th March.

What happened in the last Indoor World Championship?

The last indoor World Championship took place in Birmingham in 2018.

There were British success stories with Andrew Pozzi claiming gold in the men’s 60m hurdles and Katarina Johnson-Thompson taking gold in the women’s Pentathlon.

In total, Great Britain claimed seven medals, consisting of two golds, one silver and four bronze.

The USA topped the medal table with six gold, ten silver and two bronze.

What events take place during the competition?

The full list of men’s events is: Heptathlon; 400m; Triple Jump; 800m; 3000m; Long Jump; 60m; 1500m; Shot Put; 60m Hurdles; High Jump; 4x400m Relay; Pole Vault.

And the full list of women’s events is: Pentathlon; 60m; 400m; 1500m; Shot Put; Long Jump; 3000m; 60m Hurdles; High Jump; 800m; Pole Vault; Triple Jump; 4x400m Relay.

Who should I look out for in the Great Britain team?

Andrew Pozzi will be back looking to defend his 60m hurdles title he claimed in Birmingham four years ago and Elliot Giles is also one to watch as he targets a medal in the 800m.

Youngster Ed Faulds will hope to shine in the 400m and shot-putters Scott Lincoln and Sophie McKenna are seen as medal contenders.

Long Jumper Lorraine Ugen will fancy her chances of a medal and Keely Hodgkinson will be in the running for glory too as she takes her place in the 800m and the 4x400m relay team.

What is being said ahead of the competition?

Christian Malcolm, the Olympic head coach, said: “We are pleased to have selected 33 athletes, so far, to represent the country at the World Athletics Indoor Championships.

“Those called-up have earned their vest and I know they’ll all represent their country with pride in Belgrade next month.

“We have a number of athletes who have really stepped up during this indoor season, setting a number of PBs and SBs, so it’ll be exciting to see how they translate that into the Championship environment.

“It’s also great to see a number of athletes achieving their first senior vest too, so congratulations to the eight athletes who are gaining theirs for the first time.”

The BBC have the rights for the World Athletics Indoor Championships and they will broadcast all three days of the event via their BBC Three channel.
