It’s been 10 years since Prince William married Catherine Middleton, and there has been no shortage of drama surrounding the royals since.

From Prince Andrew’s links to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal to Harry and Meghan’s incendiary interview with Oprah, the royal family have made the headlines many times in the past decade, while William and Kate have managed to stay more or less out of the limelight.

Here we look back at the most shocking royal scandals of the past decade as the future king and queen celebrate their 10th anniversary.

The Royal family warned The Sun not to publish the photos, but the tabloid did so anyway, claiming it was in the public’s interest. At the time, Saint James’ palace said: “We have made our views on Prince Harry's privacy known. Newspapers regulate themselves, so the publication of the photographs is ultimately a decision for editors to make. "We have no further comment to make either on the publication of the photographs or on the story itself concerning Prince Harry's private holiday in Las Vegas."
Prince Andrew served as the UK's trade envoy from 2001 through 2011, but resigned from the role after Jeffrey Epstein’s sex offences came to public attention. Prince Andrew had allegedly frequented the same parties as Epstein, visited his island and he was also reportedly friends with Epstein’s associate, British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell.
Meghan wrote a letter to her dad where she explained how disappointed and hurt she was by his actions. The private letter was then leaked to Mail on Sunday and Mail Online and published in February 2019. She has since won a civil court case against ANL, the publisher of both papers, for invasion of privacy.
The late Duke of Edinburgh said he was dazzled by low sunlight as he pulled out onto a busy road in Norfolk. His Land Rover Freelander collided with a Kia, which contained a mother, her nine-month old baby and passenger Emma Fairweather. Prince Philip’s vehicle flipped over and he was rescued by a passing motorist. Hewas unhurt but both women required hospital treatment and Fairweather, who broke her wrist in the collision, called for the Prince to be prosecuted. He apologised, saying he was “very sorry” and wished her a speedy recovery.
The couple have claimed they will only have two children so as not to add too much pressure to the carbon emissions of the world’s increasing population. Speaking with primatologist Jane Goodall in the September 2019 issue of British Vogue, Harry said he would have a maximum of two kids, as “We are the frog in the water and it's already been brought to the boil. Which is terrifying. “This place is borrowed. And, surely, being as intelligent as we all are, or as evolved as we all are supposed to be, we should be able to leave something better behind for the next generation." Harry has always displayed a personal interest in the impact of climate change and environmental shifts on other parts of the world.
Prince Andrew's catastrophic BBC Newsnight interview appeared to have been the last straw, as he resigned from duties four days later. Roberts claimed she was intimate with the prince while being trafficked by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Prince Andrew denieds the claims and further alleged a photo which shows his hand around her waist in Maxwell’s London apartment was edited and false.
When he asks her how she is, she responds: “Not many people have asked if I’m okay.” The interview took place while Bradby was following the Royal couple on their tour of Africa. Markle admitted living in the public eye as a new mother had been a "struggle” and the unwanted negative press had made it “challenging”.
The couple had welcomed their first child, Archie, in May 2019 and moved to Canada to live a more private life. They released a statement saying they would be working towards becoming financially independent and would split their time between the US and UK. A source then told US Weekly: "[Prince Harry] wants to shield his son from the negativity and tension he would've been exposed to back in England."
The BBC said it would hold a full independent investigation into how Bashir obtained his interview with Princess Diana in 1995, as her brother claimed Bashir made false claims about the Royals in order to gain access to Diana. Tim Davie, the BBC’s director general, said at the time, “The BBC is taking this very seriously and we want to get to the truth. We are in the process of commissioning a robust and independent investigation.” Earl Spencer’s claims included that Bashir had mocked up bank statements he alleged belonged to members of the royal family which showed they had been receiving payment from the press for leaked information. Bashir was also investigated by the Metropolitan police, but no criminal charges were upheld.
Prince Harry r said he hadn’t spoken with his brother and father for some time, but had video-called his grandparents, Queen Elizabeth II and the late Prince Philip. Prince Harry has since been photographed speaking to William, as they left their grandfather’s funeral in April.
