The painting, created by contemporary artist Annis Booker, blends Akabusi’s historic athletic milestones with cultural symbolism.

Kriss, appointed MBE in 1992, is best known as a 3-time Olympic medallist, World Champion, and the 400m hurdles British record holder.

Now, a broadcaster, he regularly appears on channels including GB News.

North London-based artist Annis, approached Kriss as part of her particular interest in using her subjects' history and heritage as a basis for her art.

The portrait features a Union flag and a screen-printed background featuring his MBE, Olympic medals and Nigerian Igbo chief’s hat.

Annis said: "I asked if he would be interested in having his portraits painted because he was such an important figure from the late 80s /90s.

"Much of my art work explores my childhood and identity as a woman of colour born in the North of England, I was interested to know more about him and his story.

"While I knew about his incredible athletic achievements and MBE, I learnt so much more through our conversations, about his Nigerian heritage, his role as an Igbo chief, his army life, coaching, and childhood.

"When he came to the studio, he was incredibly generous with his time and very humble, despite all he has achieved.”

Annis, originally from Durham, explores identity through painting, using narrative, memory, and past experience in her work.

Drawing on experiences as a mixed-race woman born in the north-east of England, she aims to create work that invites reflection on belonging, heritage, and personal story. She trained at The Heatherley School of Fine Art, an independent art school in Chelsea.

Kriss said: “This portrait is a wonderful representation and a remarkable piece of artwork. I truly appreciate the time, care and commitment you have invested in creating it. It captures a strong likeness and is something I will be genuinely proud to display on my mantelpiece.

“At 67, this is the fourth portrait I have received across different chapters of my life, as a young sportsman, in retirement, in midlife and now. What I especially value is how beautifully this piece captures the maturity and character that time brings. It feels honest, dignified and deeply personal.

“It is a rare thing to see oneself through another artist’s eyes and feel both recognised and respected. This portrait captures me with warmth, dignity and honesty, and at this stage of life that is especially meaningful. It is a piece I shall treasure proudly for many years to come. Thank you Annis for such thoughtful and accomplished work.”
