The 2026 New Year's 'People's Honours' are presented at the Palace of Westminster
David Barton, from Essex was among 26 individuals honoured with the esteemed British Citizen Award (BCA) at the Palace of Westminster. This recognition celebrates their outstanding contributions to society.
The Medal Presentation, held on Thursday, January 22, saw David receive the coveted BCA Medal of Honour for Services to the Arts (BCAa). Recipients are invited to use the post-nominals to commemorate their achievements.

Since launching ‘Get Started Art’ in 2022, David has overseen the distribution of over 1.5 million free art therapy books and creative resources to children, schools, care homes, and hospitals across the UK. ‘Get Started Art’ is a charity founded by David providing free arts and crafts materials and support to disadvantaged children, vulnerable adults, and people of all ages with learning disabilities or special needs, not only across Essex and the UK, but now in communities internationally.
David is dedicated to transforming lives by using art as a tool for mental health support, education, and social inclusion. He has led national campaigns supporting Children’s Mental Health Week and Dementia Action Week, and his projects have reached some of the UK’s most vulnerable people.
Rather than focusing on traditional art education, David’s approach centres on accessibility. His art therapy resources are designed for individuals who may not otherwise have access to creative outlets, children with additional needs, residents in care homes, people recovering from trauma, and those living in refuge or supported accommodation. By designing materials that are simple, thoughtful, and engaging, he removes barriers and invites everyone to participate, regardless of age, ability, or background.
David was presented with the BCA Medal of Honour by Steve Gayter, Executive Director of Sponsors Novus Property Solutions who said ‘To create an organization that provides so much opportunity for so many is a fantastic achievement. David is clearly passionate about the Arts and how this can relate to so many and improve a community. This medal is clear recognition of David’s hard work’.
The presentation, hosted by TV and Radio presenter Konnie Huq, was attended by BCA Patrons Dame Mary Perkins, Founder of Specsavers, and The Lord Mott. Representatives from BCA supporters, Specsavers, Places for People, Novus Property Solutions and Aldermore Bank were also in attendance. Following the ceremony, medalists enjoyed an Open Top Lap of Honour tour taking in some of Westminster’s iconic sights in celebration of their positive impact on communities the length and breadth of the UK.
