Who is Emma Raducanu’s new coach at Indian Wells 2021? Why US Open champion made change for tennis tournament

Emma Raducanu has broken away from the coach that led her to her US Open win.

Britain’s rising tennis star, 18, is set to return to competitive action this week at Indian Wells.

It will be her first outing since she set new records in New York on her way to Flushing Meadows success.

Who is Emma Raducanu’s new coach?

Emma Raducanu has teamed up with former British Number One, Jeremy Bates, for her upcoming tournament at Indian Wells.

Raducanu’s previous coach, Andrew Richardson, was a former Davis Cup player and had been the young Britain’s coach for two years at youth level before signing a short-term deal to coach her during the US Open at Flushing Meadows.

Prior to her upcoming tournament in California, Richardson’s two-month deal was not renewed despite her incredible success in New York. Emma Raducanu has however enlisted the help of Bates to coach her for the next fortnight at the BNP Paribas Open.

Who is Jeremy Bates?

Jeremy Bates, who reached a career high of 54th in the world rankings, also trains the Number 157 and fellow Briton, Katie Boutler.

Bates confirmed to Sportsmail that he would be assisting Emma Raducanu alongside training Boulter while she competes in the qualifying stages of Indian Wells.

Bates has one singles career title to his name, three doubles titles and he reached the Wimbledon fourth round twice in the 1990s.

Since retiring from the professional tour in 1996, the former British No.1 has served as captain of Britain’s Davis Cup team and became the individual coach of another former British No.1 in Anne Keothavong.

Raducanu and Bates are not strangers to each other as Bates is also the Lawn Tennis Association’s national women’s coach.

Is Emma Raducanu still searching for a long term coach?

It is unlikely that Jeremy Bates will be a long-term coach for the US Open Champion 2021.

Emma Raducanu is hopeful to find a full-time coach this winter for the 2022 season who has top-level experience and can help her continue her rise up the ranks.

When is Emma Raducanu playing next?

Emma Raducanu was given a wildcard to appear at this year’s Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open and is scheduled to play in a first professional match since her US Open final this weekend.

The qualifications based on world rankings were announced before Raducanu jumped from 150th to 22nd, and a wildcard was therefore necessary in order to avoid having to go through the qualifying stages of the tournament.

Additionally, her current ranking means that she is one of the 32 seeds of the Open and was therefore given a bye for the first round.

Raducanu will face either world No 71 Maria Camila Osorio Serrano from Columbia or Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second round.

Following Indian Wells, Emma Raducanu will jet off to compete in the Kremlin Cup in Moscow on 18 October before then participating in the Transylvanian Open in Cluj, Romania.

Depending on her success with her new trainer at the upcoming tournaments, Raducanu may earn enough points to qualify for the season-ending WTA Finals in Guadalajara. There are a possible 1,000 ranking points up for grabs, giving her an outside chance of being able to compete in Mexico.
