Who was Suzy Lamplugh?

Suzy Lamplugh was reported missing on 28 July 1986 in Fulham, London.

The estate agent was officially declared dead in 1994.

Born 3 May 1961, Lamplugh was aged 25 when she was reported missing. The last clue to Lamplugh whereabouts was an appointment to show a house in Shorrolds Road to someone she referred to as “Mr Kipper”.

John Cannan became the only suspect in the murder of Lamplugh (PA)

Witnesses described seeing Lamplugh arguing with a man outside a property on Sharrold Road, Fulham, and then getting into a car, believed to be a black BMW.

Lamplugh’s own car, a white Ford Fiesta, was found a mile and a half away.

Who is John Cannan?

John Cannan became the only suspect in the murder of Lamplugh. He was questioned by police regarding the disappearance in 1989 and 1990.

After Lamplugh was declared officially dead in 1994, Cannan was arrested for her murder and questioned, but he was not charged.

In November 2002 the Crown Prosecution Service decided that there was insufficient evidence to charge him. However, later that month Scotland Yard held a press conference at which, in a rare move, officers named him as the man they believe murdered Lamplugh.

Cannan is currently serving three life sentences for the murder of Shirley Banks in Briston in 1987, the attempted kidnapping of Julia Holman, the rape of a woman in Reading, Berkshire in 1986, the rape of his girlfriend in December 1980 and several other abductions, attempted abductions and sexual offences.

What is In the Footsteps of Killers about?

In the Footsteps of Killers is a three part series in which Silent Witness star Emilia Fox and criminologist David Wilson reopen a cold case in each episode.

The show is filmed like a drama, and the programme makers have used the latest in forensic science and criminological research to re-examine troubling cold cases, and the cameras follow Emilia and David as they travel to the scenes of each crime, where they interview witnesses, suspects and friends and family of the victims while trying to discover what really happened.

Fox and Wilson also walk in the steps of the killers, seeing the crimes from both the victims’ and the murderers’ perspectives, and the series catches the ups and downs of their investigations, the setbacks and the breakthroughs on their way to revealing who the killer or killers may be.
