Actress Lisa Banes has died following an accident in New York

The 65-year-old was struck by an electric scooter whilst she was crossing the street in Manhattan on 4 June.

The actress was left in a critical condition with a “traumatic brain injury” following the accident.

It was reported that Banes was on her way to meet her wife Kathern Kranhol and was crossing the road when she was struck by a scooter.

The driver of the scooter fled the scene and is currently being searched for by the police. A New York Police Department spokesperson has said no arrests have been made.

Who was Lisa Banes?

Born in Ohio on 9 July, 1955, Lisa Barnes had a movie and television career spanning several decades.

Banes was raised in Colorado but attended the prestigious arts school Julliard in New York CIty.

Her first acting credit was in 1984’s The Hotel New Hampshire, starring alongside Rob Lowe and Jodie Foster.

The actress went on to star in several TV shows including the country music drama Nashville, Masters of Sex, Royal Pains and 2017’s The Orville.

On the big screen Banes appeared alongside Tom Cruise in 1988’s Cocktail as his older love interest, Bonnie, and as Christina Ricci’s mother in the movie Pumpkin.

Banes also starred alongside Ben Affleck in the movie adaptation of Gone Girl in 2014. She starred as Marybeth Elliot, the mother of Rosamund Pike’s character Amy Elliot.

She also appeared on Broadway several times. Banes starred alongside Christine Baranski in the 1988 play Rumors, performed in the musical High Society with Anna Kendrick in 1998, and most recently in the 2010 revival of Present Laughter with Victor Garber.

Who has paid tribute to Lisa Banes?

The Orville and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane led tributes for the actress.

He tweeted: “I am deeply saddened at the news of Lisa Banes’ passing. We had the good fortune to work with her on The Orville this past year.

“Her stage presence, magnetism, skill and talent were matched only by her unwavering kindness and graciousness toward all of us. A tremendous loss…”

Her representative told Entertainment Today on Monday (14 June): “We're heartsick over Lisa’s tragic and senseless passing.

“She was a woman of great spirit, kindness, and generosity and dedicated to her work, whether on stage or in front of a camera and even more so to her wife, family and friends.

“We were blessed to have had her in our lives.”

Singer Jill Sobule, who was good friends with Banes, tweeted photos of the two of them together.

She wrote: “Just busted. Lisa Banes was magnificent, hilarious, and big-hearted - always helped me through the hard times. She was so beloved by so many”
