The 12th instalment of the Madea film franchise has arrived on Netflix as Tyler Perry returns to reprise his role in A Madea Homecoming.

Tyler Perry officially retired Madea in 2019 but announced the character’s return to our screens after striking up a deal in partnership with Netflix.

In an interview in 2019, Perry said: “I was done with Madea, completely done with it … but as I’ve been looking at the state of the world — and I finished a tour in January, just before the pandemic started to break in the country — and the amount of joy and laughter that it brought to so many people, that’s what I think is missing. We need that laughter and that joy.”

Madea was first introduced on stage in the 1999 play I Can Do Bad All by Myself and since then has become an iconic character at the centre of other theatre productions and dozens of films, TV shows and even a book.

Since 2005, the franchise has grossed more than $670 million at the box office, according to Forbes.

Here is everything you need to know about the film.

What happens in A Madea Homecoming?

The 12th film in the Madea cinematic universe follows Madea’s great-grandson’s college graduation party.

Madea’s family come to town to celebrate her great-grandson’s graduation from college, but some hidden secrets threaten to destroy the joyous family get-together.

However, Madea is taking a no-nonsense approach as the family drama erupts.

The comedy movie got fans excited after Netflix confirmed the crossover of Brendan O’Carroll’s Mrs Agnes Brown and Madea Simmons, Tyler Perry’s African-American matriarch.

Perry was shown clips of Mrs Brown’s Boys when he was working on the 2016 movie Brain on Fire by director Gerard Barrett and was more than impressed by O’Carroll’s work.

Speaking to Variety, Perry revealed that he researched Brendan’s history and realised their “lives were on parallel tracks in different parts of the world,” with both of them doing live plays and then going into television.

“I thought these two worlds colliding would be amazing,” he said.

Who is in the cast?

Actor-writer-director Tyler Perry returns as the raucous and righteous matriarch with Cassi Davis-Patton, David Mann, and Tamela Mann.

It will be David Mann’s and Tamela Mann’s first appearance in a Madea film since 2011’s "Madea’s Big Happy Family".

New additions to the cast include Brandon Black, Isha Blakker, Candace Maxwell, Genva Maccarone, Amani Atkinson, and Gabrielle Dennis.

Irish actor Brendan O’Carroll will also star in the film alongside his wife Jennifer Gibney.

Viewers will most likely recognise O’Carroll and Gibney from the Mrs. Brown’s Boys Sitcom - they will reprise their roles as Agnes Brown and Cathy Brown in the comedy movie.

When does the film release on Netflix?

The comedy film hit Netflix subscribers’ screens on Friday, February 25, 2022.

The film is the first Madea instalment to premiere on Netflix and was filmed at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta in June 2021.
