Eric Dane: Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria star died aged 53 less than a year after revealing ALS diagnosis as tributes pour in
Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane has died at the age of 53 less than a year after revealing his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis.
The actor’s family issued a statement on Thursday evening (February 19) which read: "With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS.
“He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world."
They added: "Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight.
“He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
Dane was best known for his role on the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. He played Dr Mark Sloan from 2006 until 2012, briefly reprising his role in 2021. He also appeared as Jason Dean in fantasy drama Charmed and as Cal Jacobs in the award-winning drama Euphoria. He is due to make a posthumous appearance in the upcoming third season of Euphoria.
Dane’s film credits also include X-Men: The Last Stand, Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, Burlesque, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
In April 2025, Dane announced that he had been diagnosed with ALS after beginning to experience symptoms in early 2024. The star’s condition progressed, and he was using a wheelchair full-time by October 2025.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is the most common form of motor neuron disease (MND). it is a progressive neurodegenerative condition which affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord which leads to muscle weakness, loss of mobility and other complications. The life expectancy of ALS patients is usually around two-to-five years after diagnosis.
His wife, Rebecca Gayheart, was caring for her husband up until his death. The pair had initially split with Gayheart filing for divorce in 2018. However, she dismissed the divorce petition in March 2025 after seven years of separation, shortly after Dan received his diagnosis.
Tributes have poured in for the beloved actor. Kim Raver, who played his on-screen wife Dr Teddy Altman in Grey’s Anatomy, said: “Eric was a light. You’d see it effortlessly shine from him on the set of Grey’s as well as when he was with Rebecca and the girls.
“During filming he’d get this twinkle in his eye and with a mischievous look, he would deliver with perfect comedic timing, a line of dialogue that would floor you! You will be missed. My love and thoughts go out to Rebecca and their girls. We love you.”
Another fellow Grey’s Anatomy star, Kevin McKidd, also paid tribute. He shared a picture of Dane in the medical drama with the caption: “Rest in peace buddy.”
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson also paid tribute, telling Variety: "I'm heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend. Working with him was an honor. Being his friend was a gift.”
