Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has spoken about a health condition which she has been battling for nearly 20 years that has left her needing regular medication.

Garraway, who has been one of the country’s most beloved TV presenters for more than 30 years, has spoken candidly about a health battle which she first faced following the birth of her daughter Darcey, now aged 18.

The 57-year-old TV presenter, who lost her husband Derek Draper earlier this year, spoke to fellow TV star Anthea Turner about her thyroid condition on designer Sarah Haran's YouTube channel.

She said: "I've got thyroid problems, I've got the autoimmune thyroid condition. And it was discovered after I had Darcey, when it went massively overactive and actually I got super skinny. I could literally eat anything and I was thin. And initially I thought 'this is great' and then I thought actually this is not great."

She explained that condition continues to impact her daily life, and that she has to take medication to be able to manage it.

The mum-of-two, who also has son Billy, aged 15, added: "I'm still losing weight and it turned out to be overactive. So now I've gone the other way, so it's virtually packed up. So I now have to take a lot of Thyroxine and so I keep it in there, my little bag, because if I don't have it in something small, it won't be on me when I need to take it."

Her health admission comes after she recently opened up about her grief, following the death of her husband of almost 20 years in January. Speaking at a charity event she said: "I'm just at that early stage at the moment of coming out of grief. I'm just barely holding it together. I haven't actually been out that much. So it's nice to come out tonight. Derek passed away so recently, so it's just one step at a time."

Garrway’s husband Derek Draper died at the age of 56. He was one of the UK's longest-suffering Covid patients, after being diagnosed in March 2020. He was hospitalised for over a year and continued to require round-the-clock care upon release. He returned to hospital with extreme complications in December 2023, during which time he sustained a cardiac arrest.
