The cause of death of former One Direction star Liam Payne has been revealed following his tragic passing.

According to reports, authorities have confirmed that the 31-year-old died instantly after falling from the third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Wednesday, October 16. Emergency services reported that Payne sustained multiple severe injuries, including a fractured skull, leaving no chance of survival.

Buenos Aires emergency services chief Alberto Crescenti told a news outlet: "Our role was to head there quickly, give medical attention, and try to resuscitate him, but his injuries were incompatible with life. Based on what the team saw, there was apparently a cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries that led to his immediate death."

Audio from two calls made by the hotel’s head of reception to emergency services has also surfaced online. In the first call, the employee described a distressed guest, saying: "We have a guest drunk with drugs and alcohol. When he [them, gender not clear in conversation] is conscious, he is breaking everything in the room... We need someone to come."

In a second, more urgent call, he added, "We need you to send someone urgently because I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger... We’re a little bit worried he’ll do something, that he’ll put his life at risk."

Liam’s body was discovered in the hotel’s inner courtyard around 5pm local time. Witnesses told TMZ that the singer had been "acting erratic" in the hotel lobby prior to his death, reportedly smashing his laptop before being escorted back to his room.

An investigation into Payne’s death has been launched by authorities in Buenos Aires. The UK Foreign Office has confirmed they are in contact with Argentine officials "regarding reports of the death of a British man."

The singer attended one of Niall Horan's concerts in Argentina in recent weeks, and the former bandmates actually reunited during the show.
