Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli married in 2017 after meeting on the set of Orange Is the New Black in 2012.
Lauren Morelli was a writer and producer on Orange Is the New Black in 2012 when actress Samira Wiley met her. Samira Wiley played the character of Poussey Washington on the TV show from 2013 until 2019. The couple have shared that they are divorcing after nine years of marriage, they married in 2017.
Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli shared a statement with Out, which reads: "After nine years together we have decided to end our marriage, however, our lifelong commitment to co-parenting will forever remain,"
As well as starring in Orange Is the New Black, Samira Wiley went on to star as Moira Strand in The Handmaid’s Tale from 2017 until 2025. Before falling in love with Lauren Morelli, Samira Wiley was married to Steve Basilone.
Samira Wiley spoke about meeting Lauren Morelli on Orange Is the new Black with Cosmopolitan and said: “Yes, I met my wife there, but Orange changed my life in so many ways,” and added that “I was introduced to so many strong women in positions of power, I learned how to act in front of a camera, I learned how to deal with being in the public eye and how to love in the public eye. Orange gave me my platform.”
Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli married at a ceremony in Palm Springs, California, and the couple shared their engagement on Instagram. Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli share a daughter together, George Elizabeth who was born on April 11, 2021.
Samira Wiley took to Instagram a month after her daughter’s birth and wrote: “Happy 1st Mother’s Day to my beautiful wife, who four weeks ago today after laboring for almost 3 days gave birth to our first child—our gorgeous daughter, George.💜
“Welcome to the world, babygirl. We love you and we thank you for giving us the best 1st Mother’s Day two ladies could ask for.

One fan wrote: “3 days??! She's a hero for sure. What a gorgeous name for a gorgeous girl 😍 congrats.” Another fan said: “No way has your daughter got the same name as me! Well almost, I'm Georgi Elizabeth 😂 I love this so much!”
Samira Wiley also spoke about sharing photos from her wedding with Lauren Morelli with Martha Stewart Weddings and told Cosmopolitan that “There’s always a question in our relationship about what things we are going to keep to ourselves and what things should be public. It was a hard decision. But then we felt like there are so many young girls and boys who don’t see queer couples on the covers of magazines in a wedding being proud of who they are, and having [their] parents officiate.
"Those are things that some queer people have never seen. And I want them to know it’s a possibility. It’s a constant conversation. Why would we be doing this? And what creates the greater good?”
