Who is Spencer Pratt? Star of MTV The Hills and Republican running for Los Angeles mayor

Reality TV star Spencer Pratt has thrown his hat in the ring to become the mayor of Los Angeles - here’s where you might know him from.

Spencer Pratt - the former reality TV star - could be set to face off against incumbent Karen Bass in the race to be mayor of Los Angeles. Results are being counted from the election to select the next mayor of the US city after polls closed on Tuesday (June 2), with Republican Pratt emerging in a solid second place, behind current mayor Bass.

Pratt’s unlikely bid to lead the major city came after he lost his home in the LA wildfires last year and on the back of criticism from across the political spectrum to the response from city bosses - including Democrat Bass.

With votes still being counted, Pratt - who earned an endorsement from President Donald Trump - is looking set to face Bass in a run-off vote later this year for the role, as no candidate looks likely to secure a majority in the first ballot.

Who is Spencer Pratt?

The 42-year-old rose to fame in the early 2000s after appearing in reality show, The Hills. Speaking at a They Let Us Burn rally earlier this year protesting the reaction to the devastating fires, Pratt announced he was running for mayor.

The LA wildfires devastated large swathes of the city in 2025, ripping through neighbourhoods in the Pacific Palisades and Malibu, killing 12 people and destroying thousands of homes and businesses. Pratt and his wife, TV personality Heidi Montag, were among many celebrities who lost their homes.

Announcing his candidacy, Pratt said the family “lost every material possession we owned”. “My parents lost their home too, and with it, decades of memories made inside those walls,” he said, adding the failure by authorities to prevent the fires had spurred him to run.

He said: “Business as usual is a death sentence for Los Angeles. I’m done waiting for someone to take real action. That is why I am running for mayor.”

His campaign has been backed by the likes of Dancing With The Stars’ Valentin Chmerkovskiy, and US media personality Perez Hilton, who wrote: “That’s my mayor.”

Pratt’s rise to fame came in the mid-2000s as a cast member on MTV’s Laguna Beach spin-off The Hills, appearing alongside Montag. The celebrity couple, nicknamed “Speidi”, wed in 2008, and have two children. They have competed together as a single contestant on Celebrity Big Brother in 2013 and 2017, and appeared on the US version of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

In January 2025 they filed a lawsuit against the state of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Other Hollywood stars who lost their homes include reality star Paris Hilton, Oscar-winning songwriter Diane Warren, and actors Mel Gibson, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges and Billy Crystal.
