Cannes 2023: Carys Zeta-Douglas and Levon Hawke make ‘debutante’ style arrivals at Jeanne du Barry opening

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival is now underway, with Wednesday marking the first full day of screenings and industry events in the 11 days left of the festival. While the opening night film, Maiwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, saw no real protests other than critical reviews this side of the French Sea (and even an appearance by Brie Larson in the end), there was plenty of star-gazing on the french riviera as the industry came out in force - including two younger names getting the almost ‘debutante’ treatment, coming out on the red carpet.

With Michael Douglas earning an honorary Palme d’Or for his services to the industry, he was joined by wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and a debut on the red carpet for their daughter, Carys Zeta Douglas, meanwhile the gene pool is once again strong in the Thurman-Hawke bloodline with Uma Thurman bringing her son, Levon Roan Thurman-Hawke (just Levon Hawke for time saving sakes) to the red carpet eliciting overtures at Peopleworld of “who’s that young man?”

Both appearances did indeed feel very special in the late afternoon haze of the French Riviera sun - and the word that we keep returning to at Peopleworld regarding their appearances is, once again, ‘debutantes.’ Coming out at Cannes on the red carpet is a hallowed occasion for any performer, let alone young performers. Though Maya Hawke has previously indicated that she is in touch with the privileges she has as the daughter of two famous acting talents - and given that Carys has only now made a big red carpet reveal instead of perhaps the heyday of Zeta-Mania (it was a thing), perhaps using the term “nepo baby” in a derogatory way is unfair on the pair of them. For now, of course - time has a way of changing people.

Growing up in the public eye, Levon was often seen accompanying his parents to various events and premieres.
