There’s concern regarding the health of BLACKPINK performer and “the best thing going” on HBO’s ‘The Idol,’ Jennie Kim overnight, as she had to leave the stage during a performance in Melbourne, Australia. The move, echoing a similar situation Jisoo had ahead of the band’s tour of Japan earlier in the month, has left some concerned regarding a bigger health concern for the popular artist - more so than if the band will continue to tour with or without her.

YG Entertainment, the management group for BLACKPINK, assured fans that Jennie was getting the best care possible and that it was her own independent decision to take to the stage as part of a series of shows in Australia, ahead of the group’s performance at BST Hyde Park next month. “We would like to extend our sincerest apologies to all the fans who have shown their support for Blackpink and those who attended the event. We kindly ask for your understanding in this situation,” also stating that Jennie expressed “strong determination” to stay on stage for the entire Blackpink show.

“However, following medical advice on site, we immediately took measures to ensure she receives ample rest and stability,” the statement reads, noting that Jennie “will recover as soon as possible.” The other members of BLACKPINK, Rosé, Lisa, and Jisoo, had admitted that Jennie was struggling during soundcheck earlier that day - the group however did perform together at their first Melbourne date before the illness struck the performer.

However, there are concerns that perhaps the filming of the HBO series ‘The Idol,’ which saw a audience this week of 3.6 million viewers (a vast improvement over the season premier’s 910,000 viewers), travelling to Cannes Film Festival to promote the film all the while preparing and rehearsing for a world tour might be too much.

The performer, who became ill after the culmination of BLACKPINK’s last world tour in 2020, revealed the toll it had on her wellbeing in a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone magazine. “I became sick, both mentally and physically. This isn’t something I want to share in too much detail with the fans. They worry, so I want to be vague. But for three years after debuting, we worked nonstop without resting. You know, we were young, in our early twenties.”

“Our sleep systems were breaking down; we weren’t eating properly; I wasn’t hydrating myself — we did that for three to four years, and then started our tour. We were on tour for a year and a half. For a year and a half I didn’t have a home.”

Will this affect BLACKPINK’s performance in London?

Though there has been no official explanation what has caused this second bout of illness to affect Jennie Kim, organisers of BST Hyde Park, where the band are expected to play on July 2 2023, have not issued any statement thus far if the show itself is in jeopardy.

There is a significant gap between the end of the Australian tour dates, after an Auckland show was cancelled due to “unforeseen logistical challenges”, with the final performing in Melbourne on June 17 2023, and then no gigs scheduled thus far as part of the tour until the BST Hyde Park appearance.
