Eurovision 2023 is in the books, with the bookies favourite Loreen picking up her second Eurovision with the club-banger “Tattoo,” though the Liverpool audience on the evening let everyone know who the public favourite was - Finland’s entry Käärijä and the anthemic chanting that follows “Cha Cha Cha” whenever it gets played.

Then there was UK hopeful Mae Muller, who came in second to last in the overall table Saturday evening but at least did not suffer the indignation of receiving zero points. Call it perhaps the wrong style of song for Eurovision, a “flat” performance or a lack of real Eurovision stage presentation - the post-mortem for Muller is out, despite heavy rotation on the radio and strong streaming figures.

But for a competition that, to paraphrase ABAA’s Björn Ulvaeus, has helped launch the careers of a series of pop acts, have the real-time streaming figures from over the weekend demonstrated a more fervent interest in some artists after their performance at the semi-finals and the grand final?

Peopleworld has taken a look at the top five from Eurovision 2023 to see how their streaming figures this weekend have looked and if we can predict any of the entries possibly appearing on the UK Top 40 Singles Chart this weekend - and if the buzz of Mullermania might have subsided after stories of problematic practices and a if there was a general malaise in the end towards the earworm.

Stats have been sourced from Kworb and reflect streaming figures as of May 13 2023 and focus on UK Spotify streaming figures only.

Sweden: Loreen - Tattoo

The 2023 Eurovision Song Contest winner, despite a last minute surge in public votes for Käärijä, Loreen’s “Tattoo” was considered the bookies favourite throughout last week. Loreen is currently 19th in the Spotify daily streaming charts, picking up 167,808 views over the weekend and only 60,000 plays from entering the top ten.

Finland: Käärijä - Cha Cha Cha

The People’s Champions, if the noise Liverpool made during the final is a good gauge of public opinion. Käärijä “Cha Cha Cha” with its almost football game chat of a chorus has received almost as many plays on Spotify over the weekend as the winner. “Cha Cha Cha” currently has amassed 152,092 daily plays, lifting it to a peak position of 29th despite only being commercially available for the last four days.

Further down Kworb’s daily stats is Israel’s entry, “Unicorn”, by Noa Kirel - which did very well with the jury votes on Saturday night but didn’t seem to resonate too well during the public vote. That might explain why it’s currently entered the Spotify daily streaming chart at 197 with 70,851 streams - but that is only after one day of entering the top 200.

Italy: Marco Mengoni - Due Vite

Eurovision fans have always been a bit of a softy for ballads as much as Hi-NRG eurodance tracks, and for Italy’s Marco Mengoni, sticking to this formula led the musician to a fourth place finish this year. That however has not translated into streaming figures - as of writing, Mengoni has not earned enough daily plays to enter the top 200.

Norway: Alessandra - Queen of Kings

Alessandra however, the half-Norwegian, half-Italian performer representing the latter over the weekend, has fared much better. Perhaps it is the popularity of this genre of music (unabashed pop with a strong electronic production element included) that resonated with the wider music listening audience, as she placed at 41st position with 125,698 daily streams over the weekend.

Then there is the UK’s entry, Mae Muller; we’ve mentioned some of the theories behind the low placing, despite it fitting the euro-pop formula that has worked for artists before. But perhaps the performer can take solace; she is still a popular musician in terms of streaming. She is currently 14th in the daily chart with 199,533 - and according to Kworb, this has been her peak position in the daily streaming charts in the UK.

She may not have won Eurovision, but she’s still certainly captured the hearts of the general music listening public.
