While the album features some names you’d expect, like Tyler The Creator and Lil Wayne, there is one surprising guest that fans might not have been prepared to make an appearance.

Dawn FM features comedian Jim Carrey, known for roles in films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Mask, Ace Ventura and more recently, Sonic the Hedgehog.

In an interview with GQ magazine, the Canadian singer talked about his first meeting with Carrey, on his 30th birthday party.

He said: “On my 30th birthday, he surprised me. He just pulled up to my crib and took me to breakfast.

“He lived literally like two buildings down from me. He had a telescope, and I had a telescope.

“He was like, “Where do you live? What floor do you live on?” I was like, blah blah blah, and we looked out the windows on our telescopes and we could see each other.”

What are the reviews saying?

Dawn FM has been released to largely positive reviews from critics and fans alike, with the Los Angeles Times’ pop music critic Mikael Wood describing it as “2022’s first great album”.

Roisin O’Connor, from the Independent, awarded the album four out of five stars, and called it “darkly shimmering”.

O’Connor says: “Dawn FM comes in the wake of 2020’s After Hours, The Weeknd’s moody, superbly conceived work that melded his love of cinema with ominous, Giorgio Moroder-style electronic beats.

“Now he’s delving into the darkly shimmering, Eighties synthpop world of Depeche Mode and Duran Duran, helped by Scandipop producer gods Max Martin, Oscar Holter and Swedish House Mafia.”

Will Dukes, from NME, also gave Dawn FM four out of five stars, calling it “less brooding and decadent” than the usual offerings from the Weeknd, but still “a refreshingly light and accessible listen”.

Joining the four star club is David Smyth from the Evening Standard, who said that The Weeknd “doubles down on pop in his latest album with resounding success”.
